Ministry in the World

Picture
The people of Dixboro Church respond to Jesus’ command to “love one another” by serving God’s people everywhere – in Washtenaw County, across Michigan, and around the world.

Dixboro Church gives and connects with missions and ministries throughout the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church and around the world through the Engage Michigan Church Program.  From the Michigan Conference’s website: “Engage MI challenges Michigan Conference congregations to comprehensive missional learning, giving, and action with the goal of encouraging congregations to shift from transactional “ministry to” models to relational “ministry with” vulnerable people and communities. The Engage MI program consists of three focus areas: Learn, Give, Act.” Dixboro Church has met the guidelines to be an Engage MI Church for many years.

Here are just some of the ways we serve:

House By the Side of the Road
House By the Side of the Road provides clothing and small household items free of charge to those in need, serving between 20 and 30 families per day. Dixboro Church is a congregational partner, and members serve on the board and provide donations. Volunteers are needed to sort donated items and to wait on clients. Call 734-769-4085 for more information. House By the Side of the Road is located at 2051 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Food Gatherers
The Food Gatherers website tells us:  “We believe that in a land of plenty, no one should go hungry! As the food rescue and food bank program serving Washtenaw County, Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.”
Dixboro Church has been supporting Food Gatherers for years and you can help:

  • We collect non-perishable food items in a donation box in the hallway and someone from the Missions Committee delivers these to Food Gatherers every week. We emphasize this ministry on the third Sunday of every month.
  • The Youth of the church regularly do volunteer work at Food Gatherers – sorting food donations, packing boxes for distribution, etc.
  • Volunteers prepare and serve meals on the second Sunday of each month in the Food Gatherers Community Kitchen at the Delonis Homeless Shelter.
  • Many donate cash to Food Gatherers because we know that $1.00 can buy 4 pounds of food.

Habitat for Humanity
United Methodist Churches in Washtenaw County collaborate on an annual project to renovate a house for Habitat for Humanity.  People from Dixboro work on this project year round and a special effort is made to staff two complete work days each summer with Dixboro people. Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley enriches our whole community by making homeownership affordable and attainable by providing important services to Washtenaw County residents such as the home ownership and home improvements programs, community development, and programs for veterans.

Methodist Children’s Home Society
MCHS provides individualized treatment, care, advocacy and permanency to children and families impacted by childhood trauma. Through our residential, transitional living, foster care, and adoption programs they provide for and advocate on behalf of victims of child abuse and neglect.

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief)
Dixboro Church takes up a special collection every year for UMCOR Sunday (formerly known as One Great Hour of Sharing). This collection, taken up in United Methodist Churches around the world, funds the administrative costs of UMCOR. This means that all other donations and funding may be used for disaster relief.

Justice for Our Neighbors
JFON is a faith-driven ministry that welcomes immigrants and refugees into churches and communities by providing free legal services to immigrants who can’t afford a private attorney. It is also committed to providing education to the immigrant community and the community at large and advocacy for fair and humane laws and policies.

Baldwin Center
Their mission is to feed, clothe, educate and empower men, women and children in the Pontiac Community. They offer more than 25 programs such as a soup kitchen, clothes closet, holiday store and baskets, laundry, after-school program, summer enrichment camp, hygiene products, etc.

Cass Community Social Services
CCSS offers programs to people living in areas of concentrated poverty in Detroit. Their four programs include food, heath/mental health care, housing and employment. Dixboro Church has supported this ministry for many years including sending out youth group down there during the summer on mission trips.

Liberia Ministry Partnership
Along with all the United Methodist Churches in the Upper Peninsula and in the eastern half of the Lower Peninsula, Dixboro Church provides financial and prayer support to the United Methodist Church of Liberia. One major focus of support over the years has been the Hope for the deaf. The Liberia Ministry Partnership works to support and extend the covenant relationship between the people of the Michigan Annual Conference and the Liberia Annual Conference. Dixboro has supported this covenant for years with a special offering taken up just before each Annual Conference.
Haiti-Michigan Covenant Partnership
Dixboro Church participates in a national effort of all United Methodist Churches to provide on-going financial and prayer support to the people of Haiti. This partnership works to support and extend the covenant relationship between the people of the Michigan Annual Conference and the people of the Methodist Church of Haiti. Dixboro has supported this covenant for years with a special offering taken up just before each Annual Conference. We've also sent several members on mission trips there.
